Businesses, governments and nonprofits can apply for a share of $4.5 million in the final round of Volkswagen grants.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund Committee are now accepting grant applications. The deadline is April 30.

The Indiana Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Program was founded in 2017 to distribute Indiana's $41 million share of Volkswagen's settlement of Clean Air Act violations from its diesel emissions scandal in which half a million Volkswagen vehicles were cited for diesel violations.

The program has funded diesel-powered school buses, transit buses, refuse haulers and switcher locomotives across the state with electric or propane-powered alternatives.

The committee will give grants of $50,000 to $1 million.
