Employees go back to work at General Motors Corp.'s Fort Wayne Assembly plant this week, and it's not a moment too soon.

The regional economy lost far more jobs than it added in the three months ending June 30, and the vast majority of jobs lost were in the auto sector, according to an analysis by The Journal Gazette.

An analysis of employment news published in the newspaper indicates 1,587 workers in the 15 counties that make up northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio lost their jobs or were laid off indefinitely between April 1 and June 30. An additional 2,973 were laid off temporarily, while just 512 jobs were added.
