The Tribune-Star Staff report

TERRE HAUTE - Tough economic times have forced another Wabash Valley business to lay off employees.

TRW Automotive laid off 10 employees from its Marshall, Ill., location Thursday. Those laid off were primarily salaried workers and technicians, according to John Wilkerson, a TRW spokesman.

"As with all of our production plants and salaried staffs, we are adjusting the work force based on current customer demand," Wilkerson said in an e-mail, "and have instituted actions such as shift eliminations or adjustments in shift patterns and through requesting voluntary layoffs from our work force for those who elect to take it."

The 10 employees laid off Thursday were involuntary, permanent layoffs.

TRW produces advanced active systems in braking, steering and suspension as well as occupant safety systems for inflatable restraints, seat belts and steering wheels, according to its Web site.

With the layoffs, there are just under 650 employees at the Marshall location.

Wilkerson said future layoffs will depend on customer demand for the company's products.
