JEFFERSONVILLE — An empty green space in downtown Jeffersonville is one step closer to holding a giant art sculpture.

Michael Wimmer’s submitted design for “Jeff,” a series of seven 10-feet tall red figures running out from the ground, is the winner of City Canvas’s “On the Berm: It All Started with an Idea!” art project through a public vote. Wimmer is the owner of WE Studio, a New Albany art gallery.

The sculptures will be displayed on a grassy mound at the intersection of 10th and Mechanic streets and marks public arts organization City Canvas’ first of six public arts projects.

The MAMMOTH Creative Art Service co-owner Hallie Jones said the art will provide a visual buffer between the road and the maintenance lot behind it.

“I think that’s a really smart way to do it,” she said.

Wimmer’s sculptures represent the momentum of Jeffersonville’s growth and will span the entire length of the berm.

“It really kind of creates the best use of space,” Jones said.

She also said that the name of the sculpture has significance, too.

“It’s called Jeff, so it really utilizes the name of the city and incorporates a sense of place that is relevant to the community,” she said.
