MERRILLVILLE | NiSource Inc. fourth quarter profit dropped 8.1 percent, due mainly to natural gas customers conserving energy and warmer than normal weather.

The company earned $62.5 million in the fourth quarter, or 23 cents per share, as compared to $68 million, or 25 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2005, NiSource reported on Tuesday.

For the full year, profits were down 7.9 percent, due to many of the same factors that weakened fourth quarter profits.

Net earnings for the full year were $282.2 million, or $1.04 per share, as compared to $306.5 million, or $1.13 per share for all of 2005.

NiSource has 3.8 million energy customers in nine states and is the parent company of Northern Indiana Public Service Co., the largest utility in Indiana.
