SOUTH BEND — AM General  announced Tuesday it has been awarded a $428 million contract to build ambulances for the U.S. Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. In the first phase of the contract, worth $89.5 million, AM General will build 654 ambulance chassis vehicles, a variant of the long-standing Humvee design. The vehicles are designated for the Army National Guard for use in domestic disaster relief efforts.
