ANDERSON — With no opposition, approval has been given for a planned expansion by a company leasing space at Anderson Municipal Airport.

The Anderson Board of Zoning Appeals on Wednesday approved the request for a special exception by MJ Airplane Interiors for a 2,500-square-foot expansion of an existing hangar the company has leased in Anderson since 1999.

BZA members asked about the new jobs that will be created as a result of the expansion, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

MJ Airplane Interiors has been in business since 1967, said Tom Newman, CEO of the company.

“We want to create more jobs and needed space for more airplanes,” Newman said during an interview last week. “We want to have our cabinet and machine shop in another location to be more efficient.”

Currently the company has 15 full-time employees and hopes to add another five workers in the future.

“We wanted to have space for more aircraft inside the hangar,” Newman said.

The estimated $100,000 cost of the construction will be paid for by the company, airport manager John Coon said.

“There are no airport dollars involved in the project,” he said.

The hangar expansion will cover an additional 30 by 80 feet and be 15 feet in height.
