A supplier of parts for Toyota automobiles may be looking to build a factory in Jamestown.
Fukai Toyotetsu Indiana Corp. has asked the Jamestown Planning Commission to rezone a 40-acre field at 7050 S. Ind. 75 from agriculture to industrial. The plan commission is to hear the request at a 7 p.m. June 24 meeting at the Jamestown Municipal Building, 421 E. Main St., Jamestown.
The site is on the west side of Ind. 75 near the intersection of Old Union Road, about a quarter-mile south of Interstate 74.
“There’s not a whole lot out about it yet,” Town Council member Rick Beam said. “It’s not finalized, or anything.”
The community has only “heard bits and pieces” about the project, he said.
Toyotetsu America, Inc., operates four plants in North American, including facilities in Owensboro and Somerset, Tenn., and San Antonio, Texas.
The Owensboro plant began operations in July 1997; the Somerset plant opened in December 2002.
The Owensboro plant has 544 employees, manufacturing radiator supports, center body pillars, cross members, crush members, lower suspension arms and parking brake levers.
The 685 employees at the Somerset plant manufacture those parts and dash panels.
Fukai Toyotetsu Indiana Corp. was incorporated on April 14, 2014, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s Business Services Division. Toyotetsu was founded in 1946 as Toyoda Iron Works Co. Ltd., according to the company’s website.
