The Indiana Department of Transportation has awarded a construction contract for about four miles of Interstate 69 in Monroe County between Harmony Road and a branch of Clear Creek near Tramway Road. It is the first stretch of I-69 entirely in the county.

The winning bid of $57.5 million was 16 percent below the engineer’s costestimate, according to a press release from INDOT.

INDOT spokesman Cher Elliott, reached by telephone, could not say how the bid came in so low, except that “with the economy as it is, everyone is competitive for the work.”
