DUGGER — Dugger Union Community School Corp. has taken a major step forward with its plan to open a school on Aug. 25.

On Friday, representatives of DUCSC received keys to the former Union and Dugger schools, which have been part of Northeast Sullivan School Corp. Cleanup is scheduled to begin this morning in preparation for the first day of school in Dugger.

The NESC board voted to close the schools in December. DUCSC had hoped to open its own charter school, but instead, the school will fall under the umbrella of the Indiana Cyber Charter School, a charter school authorized by Trine University and recognized by the state of Indiana.

On Friday, Mark Baker, NESC superintendent, handed the building keys to DUCSC representatives.

On Monday, the Northeast Sullivan School Corp. board will act on a purchase agreement with Indiana Cyber Charter School to turn over the buildings for $1.

While the agreement won’t be finalized until Monday, the NESC Board decided to go ahead and turn over the keys so that the Dugger community could this weekend begin cleaning, setting up furniture and preparing for the start of school.

“It’s inevitable it will happen,” Baker said, and by giving them the keys Friday, that gives them three extra days to work on the building for the students they will serve.

“We’re all in it for education,” Baker said.

NESC finished its fourth day of school Friday.
