After conducting several community meetings in five school attendance areas, the East Allen County Schools board on Tuesday approved an $87.5 million building referendum, nearly $14 million greater than a proposed referendum discussed and voted on earlier.

“It was $74 million before the community meetings,” board President Chris Baker said. Two weeks ago, the dollar amounts were presented to the board, an amount that was as high as $90 million, he added.

“We did not eliminate any of the projects that were identified,” Baker said. The referendum will be on the May ballot.

During Tuesday’s work session, the board voted 5-2 to go ahead with the larger referendum that focuses on the New Haven attendance area.

If the referendum passes, the owner of a $100,000 home would pay about $31 more a year in property taxes.
