Eight months ago pro-life supporters cried out against Planned Parenthood in Lafayette for not being a licensed abortion clinic. But the clinic is not shirking the law, according to Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Indiana.

Lafayette Health Center does not provide surgical abortions and is therefore not required to be licensed as such, Cockrum said. It does, however, administer an abortion-inducing drug called Mifepristone, or RU-486. That does not require a license, according to Indiana law.

State Sen. Travis Holdman, R-Markle, has introduced Senate Bill 371, which would broaden the definition of “abortion clinic.” Holdman did not respond to repeated requests for an interview .

His bill categorizes “a freestanding entity that provides an abortion-inducing drug for the purpose of inducing an abortion” the same as clinics that carry out surgical abortion procedures.
