Indiana will have its first female chief justice when Loretta Rush, the only female member of the Indiana Supreme Court, is sworn in.

Rush, a former Tippecanoe County juvenile judge, was picked by a seven-member Indiana Judicial Qualifications Commission Wednesday, after a public interview process that included three other justices who expressed interest in the position.

Rush will replace Brent Dickson, a 28-year Supreme Court veteran who has served as chief justice since 2012. Dickson has announced he'll step down from the leadership role Sept. 1, but will remain on the court.

Joel Schumm, a professor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, said Rush will become the 20th woman in the nation to lead a state supreme court.
