SOUTH BEND — Indiana University South Bend wants to raise $35 million by 2020 for a variety of goals focused on student retention, expanding study abroad opportunities, adding endowed chairs and professorships, and supporting community health and wellness.

The ambitious campaign is part of Indiana University’s larger campaign to raise $2.5 billion universitywide by 2020, which will be IU’s bicentennial year.

The public phase of the IU South Bend campus was just announced by Chancellor Terry Allison. A total of $18.4 million — more than half the goal — already was raised during the “quiet” phase of the capital campaign, which began in 2012.

While the campus has building and renovation needs, the capital campaign isn’t focused on that. “It’s more about the quality of the student experience than raising money for construction,” Allison said.

Donors can specify that their gift go to fund a specific university program or need.

The IU South Bend campaign focuses on four broad priorities that reflect the central goals of the IU bicentennial plan: enabling student success and support; creating the next generation of global leaders; recruiting the best and most creative faculty; and creating a healthier state, nation and world.
