Mucky. Yucky. Muddy. Sludgy. Unnecessary.

The League of Women Voters of Muncie and Delaware County on Monday left little doubt about its feelings concerning the Mounds Lake reservoir proposal.

"This project is a bad idea justified by a non-existent need for water," Bea Sousa of the League told the Delaware County commissioners.

Representatives of the group were the latest to attend the county commissioners meeting to raise concerns about the reservoir proposal.

The commissioners have heard from both sides in the Mounds Lake proposal in recent weeks because the next step in the years-long process will likely be up to Delaware and Madison county officials. If the project goes forward, officials from the two counties would assemble boards and commissions to carry the idea.

Anderson-based Corporation for Economic Development proposed the Mounds Lake plan in March 2013 and it has moved through early phases of study and feasibility that were funded by $600,000 from the state. The plan proposes creation of a seven-mile-long reservoir from Anderson to Yorktown by damming White River in Anderson.

The resulting reservoir would be 2,100 acres in size and contain 11 billion gallons of water. The project would take years to build and cost $440 million, the CED estimated.
