Nine teachers lost their jobs when the Madison school board approved a reduction-in-force and several other cuts to save money at a special meeting Wednesday.

All the cuts approved by the board will save $1.5 million, Superintendent Tom Patterson said.

Six teachers, two media specialists, one counselor and one administrator took the school district's early-retirement incentive, which was offered to save money.

Thirteen aides' jobs were eliminated, and the working hours of one aide were reduced two and a half hours. Two custodians' jobs were cut.

One program was cut. The ELOP program for high-achievement fourth- and fifth-graders will be kept for next year's fifth-graders, but ELOP will not be available for fourth-graders next year.

The number of teachers losing their jobs was five fewer than on an earlier list because those teachers already have been hired back.

Twenty-six teachers had received reduction-in-force letters, but 12 were kept almost immediately.
