A 25-member committee is coordinating communitywide efforts to offer assistance to Monroe County residents who want help signing up online for health insurance through the Indiana marketplace.

The committee of representatives from such organizations as IU Health Bloomington Hospital, the city of Bloomington, United Way, the county health department, the public library, Volunteers in Medicine of Monroe County and Ivy Tech — will be spearheading educational forums and speaking engagements at organizations and service clubs in the weeks and months ahead. The times and dates will be announced in The Herald-Times when they are set up.

“We all felt we had to do something,” said Nancy Woolery, health projects manager with the Bloomington Department of Community and Family Resources. “We know there is going to be a lot of confusion out there, and there are many people in the community who think the federal government has overruled the law.”

Indeed, the Kaiser Family Foundation recently released a poll showing that four in 10 Americans are unaware that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land, and that many believe it’s been repealed by Congress.
