MUNCIE — Five teachers were laid off during the Muncie Community School Board meeting Tuesday night, a significantly smaller number than the 37 teaching positions the district is cutting.

Three of those laid off will be offered part-time positions next year, board Vice President Debbie Feick said after the meeting.

A couple of weeks ago, Superintendent Steven Baule told The Star Press he was planning to cut 37 teaching positions by the end of June to keep pace with the district's falling enrollment and ongoing financial problems.

During the school year, between September 2015 and February 2016, MCS had 98 students leave. And a third-party financial review found MCS has a $16.75 million deficit.

In May, reduction-in-force letters had been sent out to 16 teachers, warning them that they could lose their jobs.
