Gov. Mike Pence said he’s requesting to speak with President Barack Obama about the state’s proposed health care expansion when he greets the president in Evansville on Friday.

Pence announced earlier this week he will greet Obama at Tri-State Aero when the president arrives for his visit in Southwestern Indiana. Pence sent Obama a letter Thursday to request the meeting on the state’s proposed expansion of the Healthy Indiana Plan to cover some 350,000 uninsured Hoosiers.

The federal government is currently weighing the state’s request, which represents Pence’s twist on the Medicaid expansion found in Obama’s signature health care law.

Pence said his administration is in negotiations with the federal government on the proposal. He’s yet to hear back if Obama will hold a brief meeting with him Friday.

“We have been increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress in those discussions,” Pence said. “I’m going to take the opportunity that I have (Friday) to call that to the president’s personal attention and seek the opportunity to discuss that with him.”
