For the 32nd straight month, recreational vehicle shipments have surpassed figures from the same month the year prior, according to an RV trade group.

A total of 26,441 units were shipped in August, a 5.8 percent increase compared with August of 2013. Year-to-date totals reached 246,483, a gain of 9 percent over the 226,125 units shipped through August of last year, the Reston,Va.-based Recreation Vehicle Industry Association announced Monday.

“The economy continues to recover,” said Mark Bowersox, executive director of the Recreation Vehicle Indiana Council. “Consumer confidence continues to recover. The RV industry continues to be well positioned as the other economic factors rebound.”

The industry bottomed out during the recession in 2009 when only 165,700 units were shipped. But it’s been rebounding as a result of an improving economy and innovations in the industry.
