MUNCIE — City building commissioner Craig Nichols' private company remodeled a portion of a local economic development project — then Nichols inspected his own work on the city's behalf.

Nichols' company, Capitol Consulting and Property Management, won a $25,000 contract to erect a wall, an ADA-accessible ramp and handrails in a building at 608 E. Main St. that was purchased by the city and then transferred to Sustainable Muncie, the organization that is remodeling the former Cintas/Midwest Towel building across the street into the MadJax (formerly GearBox) makers hub.

City records show that after Capitol Consulting was given the remodeling contract to the building, Nichols inspected it twice: once on Feb. 23 for a framing inspection and again on June 20 for a final inspection.

Inspection certificates for the two inspections bear only Nichols' signature as "inspector."

Demolitions performed by Nichols' companies for the city and Muncie Sanitary District are among the elements in an ongoing FBI investigation into allegations of wrongdoing in Muncie city government.
