ANGOLA — K&D Contract Pork has withdrawn its special exception request for a proposed 4,800-hog confined animal feeding operation.
The Steuben County Plan Office confirmed Friday that John Schwarz, attorney for K&D owner Keith Werner, requested the withdrawal in a Thursday email.
"They wanted an extension," Vina Conti, assistant Steuben plan director, said. "They're working on an odor management plan."
Conti said K&D wasn't granted an extension by the Plan Office because it felt the issue of the proposed CAFO has been going on too long — since February 2014.
"Since he wasn't granted a continuation, he has to refile and start over with a whole new petition," Conti said.
The Steuben County Board of Zoning Appeals was supposed to have a public hearing Monday on the special exception. That is now canceled with the withdrawal of the petition.
Werner, a third-generation farmer, needed the special exception from the county due to the size of his proposed CAFO.
He had already received a 5-4 recommendation from the Plan Commission that the farm would not adversely affect the county master plan.
