Richmond Community Schools could have to lay off eight to 10 teachers for the 2015-16 school year, executive director of human resources Aleasia Stewart told the RCS board Wednesday.

Stewart said she had hoped attrition — retirements and resignations — would be enough to cover expected budget shortfalls, but at this point, that does not appear to be the case.

Letters to teachers facing reduction probably will be delivered next week, said Stewart.

“We will handle this with the utmost sensitivity because this is a difficult process,” she said.

Interim Superintendent Betty Poindexter pointed out the district could recall some of those teachers if there are resignations over the summer months.

The Richmond Education Association teachers’ union has been informed of the reductions. Details about what teachers are included in the layoffs will be available at future board meetings.
