Manufacturer SCHOTT Gemtron plans to close a unit at its Vincennes facility later this month, eliminating 65 jobs there.

The facility’s corporate parent, SCHOTT, is a German-based company that makes specialty glass, materials, components and systems for a variety of industries.

In a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, SCHOTT Gemtron said it will close its Food Display Unit effective March 24.

The letter was sent in compliance with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. This act, also known as the WARN Act, requires employers to provide advance notice of mass layoffs or facility closures.

“This closure is due to a significant down turn in business which has required a corporate wide reorganization,” Schott Gemtron wrote in its letter to the state.

The plant has a contract with the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades Local 1165. As part of the union contract, workers affected by the shutdown will have the chance to displace employees in other units based on seniority and job level, SCHOTT Gemtron’s letter says.

A call to SCHOTT Gemtron’s Vincennes plant manager had not been returned Monday afternoon.

The Vincennes facility is one of 13 North American SCHOTT locations. The company also has operations in Louisville, Kentucky as well as California, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Canada and Mexico.
