Greater Lafayette's passenger rail service will be significantly reduced after April 1 if Indiana can't resolve its regulatory dispute with the Federal Railroad Administration.

Here are answers to basic questions about the service between Indianapolis and Chicago, how it's operated and why it's in danger of being cut back.

What is the current train service between Indianapolis, Lafayette and Chicago?

Two trains provide passenger rail service for a total of seven days of service each week: the four day-a-week Hoosier State and the three-day-a-week Amtrak Cardinal.

The northbound Hoosier State train leaves Lafayette at 7:33 a.m. Eastern time on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. It is scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 10:05 a.m. Central time.

The southbound Hoosier State train leaves Chicago at 5:45 p.m. Central time on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday and is scheduled to arrive in Lafayette at 10 p.m. Eastern time.

The Cardinal runs between New York City and Chicago, and stops in Lafayette at the same times as the Hoosier State, but on different days.

The northbound Cardinal runs Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

The southbound Cardinal runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The cost of a one-way reserved coach ticket is as low as $22 on any of those trains.

Why are two different trains operating on the same route?
