While Gary suffered an exodus since 2000 that cost it 22 percent of its citizens, the 2010 Census shows most cities and towns in southern Lake County grew.

Crown Point grew 38 percent, from a 2000 population of 19,806 to a 2010 population of 27,317.

Hobart also grew, with a 14.5 percent increase from 25,363 in 2000 to 29,059 in 2010.

Lake Station’s population fell by 10 percent in the last decade, from 13,948 in 2000 to 12,572 in 2010.

Gary: 80,294 (22 percent decrease)

Highland: 23,727 (0.7 percent increase)

Merrillville: 35,246 (15 percent increase)

Munster: 23,603 (10 percent increase)

St. John: 14,850 (77 percent increase)

Schererville: 29,243 (17.5 percent increase)

Winfield: 4,383 (90 percent increase)
