Logansport's Staples office supply store is closing Sept. 20, a company spokesperson said.

It's the latest in a slew of closings the company announced in March it would pursue, stating its goal was to shutter about 225 stores, more than 10 percent of its U.S. locations, by the end of 2015. It had 30 Indiana stores early this year.

The company closed 80 stores nationwide in the last quarter, according to a Staples press release Wednesday listing its second-quarter performance. So far in 2014, the chain closed a total of 96 stores and anticipated closing 40 more in the remainder of 2014, a spokesman said in the company's earnings webcast Wednesday morning.

Eight stores were also downsized to a recently developed 12,000-square-foot format.

"As customers shift online, we are taking aggressive action to right-size our retail footprint," public relations specialist Kaitlyn Reardon said in an email. She said customers in the Logansport area would be able to visit its Kokomo store or shop from home on the company's website.

The store in Logansport opened in 2000 at its present location at 3930 E. Market St. on the east edge of Logansport. It employed 27 at its opening, according to news reports.

Reardon declined to state how many employees are being affected by the upcoming closure, or whether any other Indiana Staples stores are being closed or have been closed recently.

The Seymour Tribune in southern Indiana reported last week that the Staples in Seymour would be closing Sept. 13. The Madison Tribune also reported the Madison and Greensburg locations were closing.
