SOUTH BEND — The Common Council on Monday granted preliminary approval of a nearly $1 million tax abatement for a portion of the former Studebaker assembly plant.

Kevin Smith, owner of Deluxe Sheet Metal and Union Station Technology Center, plans to spend $14.5 million to renovate a 220,000-square-foot section of the building, located at 635 S. Lafayette Blvd.

The project is just one part of a larger plan to redevelop the entire property, which sits adjacent to Union Station on the other side of the elevated railroad tracks.

Smith will move several of his businesses, including Deluxe Sheet Metal, into a portion of the newly renovated space and then lease the remainder to various tenants.
