The Evansville-based developer that purchased a portion of the former Whirlpool manufacturing facility paid $2.9 million for the property, according to the Vanderburgh County Assessor's Office.

On April 1, The Kunkel Group announced that it had purchased 1.2 million square feet of the Whirlpool building, located at 5401 U.S. 41 North. Paperwork for the deal made its way to the Assessor's Office this week, at which time the purchase price became a matter of public record.

In its previous news release, Kunkel said it planned to announce "in the near future" details on "several new and existing businesses" in negotiations to locate on the site.

The Kunkel Group is working with commercial real estate firm Jones Lang LaSalle to market the property.

Neither The Kunkel Group nor Jones Lang LaSalle could be reached Thursday for details on the site's progress.

Whirlpool, which maintains a product development center in Evansville, retained ownership of a portion of the property. Whirlpool also leased back from Kunkel some of the space that Kunkel purchased from the manufacturer. That leased space will provide additional room for the product development center, which employs about 300 people
