Efforts to adopt statewide smoking restrictions have key support from Gov. Mitch Daniels and Senate President Pro Tem David Long. But the big question in 2012 will most likely be the same as it was in 2011: Should lawmakers insist on an all-or-nothing choice or accept distasteful exemptions for bars, casinos and other establishments?

Long appears to encourage an approach of don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, indicating a ban with exemptions is better than no law at all. And in the realities of the legislature, compromise may be the only way a law can be adopted.
