Elkhart County will not be subject to a reassessment order, according to a letter from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance.

Cathy Searcy, Elkhart County assessor, received the letter Thursday from the DLGF announcing the decision.

"Officials in Elkhart County conducted their assessments in accordance with state guidelines and demonstrated due diligence in conducting the original assessments," Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave said in a prepared statement.

A press conference was scheduled to be held at 1:30 today announcing the decision.

Four counties have been ordered to do reassessments - Delaware, Gibson, Marion and Posey - because the agency says there is evidence that high commercial and/or industrial properties were undervalued. That shifted a disproportionate share of property taxes onto residential property owners.
