Even before the first brick is in place for Harrison Square, city officials are working to encourage both development and preservation in the areas surrounding the $120 million project.

Harrison Square has long been touted as a catalyst for future downtown development. As a way to maximize its potential, the city in March began working to attract development outside the project boundaries.

But the plan is a bit complicated. It tries to balance efforts to preserve blocks of homes with historic designation, while also promoting è development. The plan includes some creative zoning that permits residential and commercial uses.
