See if this sounds familiar: Walk into Best Buy, look at the laptop computers.
Compare the screen size. Test the keyboard ergonomics. Ask the salesperson questions.
Then go home and buy the same computer from an online-only retailer instead.
Winner? The consumer, who just saved the obligatory 7 percent sales tax charge.
Loser? According to state Sen. John Broden, D-South Bend, just about everybody else.
In 2012, the Indiana legislature is expected to take up the question of how to collect sales tax from online retailers — specifically those without a physical presence in the state.
