North American Pipe Corp. has idled its operation in Bristol, according to parent company, Westlake Chemical.

Twenty-five employees were laid off today and the remaining six "will help with an orderly shutdown of the facility over the next few months," Dave Hansen, senior vice president at Westlake, wrote in an e-mail.

The Bristol plant, located at 503 E. Vistula, makes PVC pipe.

Hansen stated the plant in Bristol is being closed because of the "overall business and economic conditions," particularly in the housing and building products markets.
