Four welcome signs have been built at different entry points around the city of Elkhart, and a city official said it was cheaper than expected.
After seeking bids from different developers, two companies were paid a combined $107,000 to build the four signs, TIF Infrastructure Project Supervisor Adam Fann said. The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission had allocated $155,000 for the signs in March.
“I think, in consideration of the weather we had, (the installation of the signs) went really well,” Fann said. “We didn’t have a lot of cold temperatures and snow, and the companies were able to get them installed.”
Premiere Signs built the 24-foot welcome sign for $53,000 north of Elkhart, Fann said. The sign can be seen along the exit west from the Indiana Toll Road toll booths to Cassopolis Street. It was completed about a month ago, he said.
US Signcrafters built the other three 9-foot-tall signs for $54,000 throughout Elkhart. They were completed over the last three weeks. Those can be seen:
