MUNCIE — The former BorgWarner plant, empty since 2009, has been sold and will be demolished.

The plant along Kilgore Avenue on Muncie's west side has been purchased by an Ohio company that will tear most of it down, The Star Press has learned.

The building was purchased by the Jim Wallace Company of Sagamore Hills, Ohio, according to information on a demolition permit filed with the Muncie building commissioner's office.

Jim Wallace told The Star Press Monday afternoon he buys industrial buildings, although this is his first in Indiana.

Asked why he bought the building, Wallace laughed and replied,"I don't even know. My wife asked me the same thing."

Wallace said he plans to demolish most of the million-square-foot-plus building, leaving intact up to 200,000 square feet that is in good condition, with plans to try to lease it. He added that he plans to clean up the property and leave it looking better than it does now.
