Jackson County United Way has wrapped up its 2009 fundraising campaign at 90 percent of its goal.
The organization recently held a recognition event, honoring those companies and individuals in the community that contributed a total of $829,832 to help fund 20 local service agencies in 2010.
United Way 2009 President Jay Fischer of SIHO said the economy was a major factor in not reaching this year's goal of $950,000.
"It was a difficult campaign," he said. "But there are still many good stories to tell."
Those stories come from the 20 partner agencies that provide a variety of services and programs to the community. They are American Red Cross, Anchor House, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, Child Care Network, Girls Inc., Head Start, Hoosier Trails Council Boy Scouts, Kentuckiana Girl Scouts, Jackson County ARC, Meals on Wheels, Mental Health America of Jackson County, Salvation Army, READ Jackson County, Turning Point and senior citizen centers in Brownstown, Crothersville, Medora, Freetown and Seymour.
Nate Tormoehlen, 2010 president, said the board will meet Wednesday to decide whether to use its reserve funds to cover the shortfall.
