Connersville seeks to improve image by planting trees, eliminating billboards

Darrell Smith, Connersville News-Examiner

New trees could be coming along the north entrance to Connersville to better improve the image of the community for those who visit or may be looking to live, work or start a business.

The Connersville Board of Public Works and Safety Monday established a committee to work with the Fayette County Foundation to determine how the mowing will occur and where the trees can be planted.

Anna Dungan, executive director of the foundation, told the board the Hometown Competitiveness process identified the need to beautify the entrances to the community. With the coming of Carbon Motors, the Indiana 1 north entrance was chosen to be the first.

The trees would be planted from the Carbon Complex to 3rd Street, followed by welcome signs and directional signs to places like Connersville Middle School or Fayette Regional Health System, she said.

The initiative also calls for removing the billboards from Harrisburg Road to 30th Street, she said. Those discussionss will have to occur with the billboard owners.

“In recent discussions with the officials from Carbon Motors and another business in town, that is the main thing they noticed,” she said. “Almost 90 percent of those advertisements are advertising business or organizations not in Fayette County.”

Funding for the new trees would come from the foundation through a local donor. The request is to implement the project and for city crews to remove trees.
