Elkhart County unemployment rate rises in January 2010, leads state
Both Indiana and the U.S. reported 9.7 percent unemployment in January. The five counties with the highest unemployment rate are:
* Elkhart, 15.6 percent

* Noble, 14.4 percent

* Vermillion, 14.4 percent

* Fayette, 13.9 percent

* Starke, 13.7 percent

The five Indiana cities with the highest unemployment rate are:

* Elkhart, 17.2 percent

* Goshen, 15 percent

* Kokomo, 14.4 percent

* Hobart, 13.2 percent

* Marion, 13.2 percent

Unemployment in Elkhart County continued to rise in January while the city's rate is fell.

According to figures released today from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, Elkhart County's unemployment rate, which continues to lead the state, was 15.6 percent in January, up from 15.3 in December. The city of Elkhart's rate fell from 17.9 percent in December to 17.2 percent in January. Goshen's unemployment rate rose slightly from 14.9 percent in December to 15 percent in January.

All three sets of numbers were down from January 2009, when Elkhart County reported 19.2 percent unemployment, Elkhart City reported 20.2 percent unemployment and Goshen reported 19.6 percent unemployment.
