ANDERSON — Forty-six of the 163 Anderson school teachers laid off at the beginning of the summer will have jobs when school resumes.
During a special meeting on Tuesday, the Anderson Community Schools board approved the recall of the teachers.
High school math teacher Darlene Fairer’s name wasn’t on the list, but she attended the meeting anyway.
During her first year at ACS in 2008, Fairer was laid off but ended up being recalled when a slot opened.
This time around, she’s watched as her colleagues’ names are added to the recall list, but has no idea if her own name will be chosen.
With just a math certification, Fairer can only teach mathematics.
Fairer is at the bottom of the mathematics seniority list, but she’s behind only one other person.
Teachers on the recall list include those from nearly every subject area.
They include 11 elementary school teachers, two business teachers, two deans, seven English teachers, one Spanish teacher, six physical education teachers, one home economics teacher, one industrial technology teacher, one librarian who will teach math, one math teacher, two music teachers, one science teacher, one social studies teacher and nine special education educators.
The seniority levels of the educators range from one year to 17 years.
Beth Clark of ACS said the school district will be recalling more teachers but failed to reach some educators in time for the meeting.
Fairer has been looking for other jobs because she doesn’t know if she’ll be recalled.
“At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if I did and I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t,” she said.
During the school board meeting, Fairer learned that a laid-off librarian got a math certification during the summer and due to her prior years of service with ACS, has stepped in line in front of Fairer in the seniority list.
Otherwise, Fairer would have been the very next person on the recall list.
Though she has a job interview with another district next week, Fairer said she would prefer to stay local.
