U.S. Forest Service buys Lost River land in Orange County

Carol Kugler, Herald-Times

The Hoosier National Forest is purchasing 212 acres of land near Wesley Chapel Gulf in Orange County from The Nature Conservancy with $466,000 in federal funds through the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The federal fund, created by Congress in 1964, takes royalty payments primarily from offshore oil and gas revenues and distributes them throughout the United States to purchase land, water and wetlands.

The majority of the land was purchased in the 1990s by The Nature Conservancy. Another small property was purchased in 2003, according to Joe Tutterrow, director of protection for The Nature Conservancy’s Indianapolis office.
