Tropicana Evansville saw year-over-year increases in both its gambling revenue and its visitation last month, beating Indiana's state averages.

The Evansville casino earned $11.3 million from gambling in March, up 13 percent over March 2015. It also saw 101,512 visitors during the month, up 6 percent.

Taken as a whole, Indiana's casinos earned a total of $202.5 million in gambling revenue in March, up 3 percent. They also saw 1,473,302 visitors, a drop of 6 percent.

Evansville's year-over-year improvements may have been due in part to weather patterns.

According to National Weather Service records, last month Evansville received only a trace of snow. The area also had only one day in which more than an inch of rain fell. That was on March 10, when 1.24 inches of rain was recorded.

Weather conditions were much different last year.

In 2015, Evansville received 2.61 inches of rain on March 3-4, followed by 8.5 inches of snow on March 4. The area also received more than two inches of rain on March 13-14, which was a Friday and Saturday — the busiest times for casinos.

Around the state last month, Tropicana was among eight casinos to post gambling revenue gains. Another two posted revenue declines, and three remained essentially unchanged from the previous year.

Looking at admissions, Tropicana was among four casinos to see gains last month. Another five saw visitation declines, while one held steady. Three other facilities, including the French Lick Casino, do not report admissions statistics.

Numbers in this story come from the Indiana Gaming Commission's March casino revenue report, which was released Friday.
