The La Porte County Board of Commissioners set the formal closing date of the County Home for Aug. 1 as the final resident prepares to leave the home and head to South Bend on Tuesday.

A second appraisal of the home is being conducted as the county's plan continues to simultaneously test out the market by putting the home up for sale while also continuing to seek grant options in order to convert the home into senior housing, a drug treatment center or any other grant opportunity options.

Jerry Cooley, head of maintenance, informed the commissioners the $4,787 security system approved last meeting by the La Porte County Council is beginning to be installed.

Kay Felton, administrator of the County Home, brought a list of items before the commissioners from the county home, which other departments had requested in the wake of the closing.

"This is just small items," Felton stated about the items, including kitchenware requested by the La Porte County Sheriff's Department.

Commissioner Dr. Vidya Kora proposed distribution of any items from the home be tabled until a joint workshop could be held with the La Porte County Council, which was agreed upon by the other commissioners.
