SPENCER — When it comes to affordable housing, many people choose mobile home living.

In Greene County, for instance, 24 percent of housing units — 3,403 — are mobile homes. It’s 22 percent in neighboring Owen County, which has 2,474 mobile homes, according to census data.

But how they are assessed for tax purposes varies. John Coleman found out just how much when he went to the Owen County Assessor’s Office to pay taxes on a $1,500 mobile home manufactured in 1983. A year’s worth of property taxes would be $112 if it was not on a permanent foundation and $455 if it was.
