For 20 students and young adults from Myanmar, it’s been about two weeks of nonstop leadership and cultural experiences in Bloomington.
The Burma Youth Leadership Program is a new annual program from the U.S. State Department. The department partnered with Indiana University to bring young people from Myanmar to the U.S. to learn about being leaders in their communities.
The state department has similar youth leadership programs in about 130 countries and regions to share education and culture, said Carolyn Lantz from the youth programs division in the state department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
“We want to build multilevel relationships because those are what create mutual respect and trust,” she said “This is a part of U.S. foreign policy.”
