South Bend school board OKs $12 million in cuts

Kim Kilbride, South Bend Tribune Staff Writer

SOUTH BEND -- After months of discussion, the South Bend Community School Corp.'s board voted to cut more than $12 million from the district's budget by the end of next year.

But the process was anything but straightforward.

In the end, board member Dawn Jones cast the lone vote against Superintendent Carole Schmidt's budget-reduction plan, which calls for the closure of two yet-to-be-named schools, along with Riley Early College High School, and the elimination of 80 teaching positions, among a slate of other things.
