International Paper to layoff 50 at Crawfordsville plant

Andy Barrand, Journal Review

Employees of International Paper’s Crawfordsville facility were notified last Friday that the company will eliminate 50 full- and part-time jobs over the next three to four weeks.

The employee downsizing will bring the company’s local workforce to 113.

International Paper purchased Inland Container in February. With the acquisition the company found they could better serve their employees by transferring production to other facilities, said Amy Sawyer, senior communications manager.

The plant currently has four shifts that operate 24-hours a day, seven days a week to produce corrugated packaging.

Sawyer said with the transition the local facility will move to three shifts, working 24-hours a day, five days a week.

“This move will save us in freight costs and help to make our facilities work more efficiently,” Sawyer said. “It will help to better the local factory’s performance, saving them money in the long run while improving quality to our clients.”

Sawyer said the company is taking three to four weeks to make the switch so it can work with its customers.
