AUBURN — The DeKalb County Council approved two tax increases Monday, raising taxes on incomes and properties starting in 2015.

An increase from 1.5 percent to 2 percent in the county income tax rate will raise an estimated $2 million for public safety. Of that sum, $1.1 million will go to county government, with the rest divided among cities and towns.

The income tax increase also will bring $2 million for property tax relief to qualified residential properties, which include homesteads and rental housing.

The higher income tax rate expires Dec. 31, 2016, and must be approved again to continue beyond that date.

The council raised its property tax rate for a cumulative capital development fund from 1.9 cents to 3.3 cents per $100. That is expected to collect an additional $300,000 per year, which council members said they intend to spend on bridges.

The property tax increase will add an estimated $7 per year in taxes on a $150,000 homestead with a mortgage exemption, a consultant said.
