Joseph H. Hogsett, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced that he is resigning from office effective July 31.

Hogsett, a former Indiana Secretary of State, was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn into office in October 2010.

He submitted a letter of resignation to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Monday morning.

News of his resignation was released by his office along with a copy of his full resignation letter this morning.

His letter gives no reason for his resignation or indication that it might be linked to future political plans such as a run for mayor of Indianapolis.

During his tenure in the position, Hogsett expanded the U.S. Attorney's presence in Southwestern Indiana by adding attorney's to its Evansville office. He made frequent appearances for news conferences in Evansville and other Southern Indiana communities.

According to his resignation letter, the office set new records for the number of defendants charged and the total number of criminal convictions during his tenure, leading the nation in average length of sentences imposed on criminal defendants. At the same he touted annual reductions in spending.
