Lafayette School Corp. board members unanimously voted Monday night to accept a proposal that would ban firearms from schools.

Members heard a second reading of the proposal that was first discussed in a work session in May.

The policy prohibits all but police officers, school resource officers and security officers from possessing firearms on school property, Superintendent Les Huddle said.

The proposed policy reads in part: “No school employee, except those specifically identified in this policy, may possess a firearm in a school building or on school property while on duty as a school employee.”

In addition, no one — including school board members — may intentionally or openly display a firearm at any public meeting of the board unless he is a member of law enforcement, the military or a guest “specifically invited to the meeting for the purpose requiring the display of a firearm.”
